Meet Mrs. Sabrina Royal, DKH Academy's First & Second Grade Teacher

At DKH Academy, we've always believed in building strong foundations that prepare children for lifelong learning.

Last year, we took an exciting step forward by launching our first Early Elementary Program with an integrated Senior Kindergarten and First Grade classroom. This year, we're proud to continue that growth with our very first dedicated First Grade and Second Grade classroom.

Leading this exciting new chapter is Mrs. Sabrina Royal, an experienced educator with more than 35 years of teaching experience.

Over the past year, Mrs. Royal has become a familiar face at DKH as a substitute teacher. Most recently, she led our First and Second Grade campers during Camp DKH, where she quickly built meaningful relationships with students and families.

What stood out to us from the very beginning was Mrs. Royal's enthusiasm for teaching, her experience working with first and second grade students, and her genuine passion for helping children grow in confidence as learners. We couldn't be more excited to welcome her to the DKH team.

Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

My husband, Lee, and I have an amazing daughter named Michaela, and we recently welcomed a new puppy to our family named Edgar Poe! We love movie nights, trying new restaurants, and traveling during the summer. Disney World and anywhere with a beach are our favorite destinations. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, crafting, reading, and spending time with Michaela.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I've loved working with children for as long as I can remember. My own teachers made such a positive impact on my life, and I knew from an early age that I wanted to follow in their footsteps and make the same difference for others.

What do you love most about teaching first and second grade?

I love watching students grow in confidence. They begin the year learning how to tackle new challenges, and it's amazing to see them develop new skills, solve problems, and realize they're capable of so much more than they imagined.

What is your approach to teaching?

I believe every child learns differently, so it's important to meet students where they are in their learning journey. Growth happens one day at a time, and every success, challenge, and mistake becomes an opportunity to learn.

What do you hope students remember most about their time in your classroom?

I hope my students remember that learning is fun! I also want them to know it's okay to make mistakes because mistakes help us grow, both inside and outside the classroom.

What attracted you to DKH Academy?

I'd always heard wonderful things about DKH. A former student's mother invited me to substitute, and I immediately fell in love with the community. I'm excited to be part of a school where I have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students and their families.

What excites you most about leading DKH's first dedicated First Grade and Second Grade classroom?

I am so excited to be the first teacher for the new first and second grade classroom! I can’t wait to spark a love for learning in each child! 

What would you like parents to know about you as a teacher?

I want parents to know that I will love and care for their child every single day. I look forward to partnering with families so we can help every child reach their fullest potential. It truly is a joy and a privilege to be a teacher.

What are some of your favorite classroom traditions?

I love sharing picture books because they open the door to meaningful conversations and creative activities. We often complete a craft or hands-on project connected to the story, and every afternoon we enjoy reading a chapter book together. One of my favorite weekly traditions is Fun Friday, which gives all of us something to look forward to.

What's something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I'm originally from California, and I once worked at Disneyland!
