At DKH Academy, AgriSTEAM is woven into the everyday experience of childhood.
With more than 50% of our campus outdoors and the first certified Nature Explore Classroom in Texas, DKH has long believed children learn best through meaningful connection with the natural world. Every student participates in AgriSTEAM experiences throughout the year as part of everyday learning.
Students plant, harvest, observe, build, question, taste, compare, collect, and discover through meaningful hands-on experiences connected to the natural world.
From toddlers exploring textures in the garden to elementary students studying ecosystems, nutrition, seed saving, and sustainability, AgriSTEAM helps children develop curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how living systems work together.
This is science children can touch.
Learning children can taste.
Wonder children can carry with them for life.
Learning Through Living Things
AgriSTEAM at DKH is intentionally hands-on.
Children do not simply learn about science from books or worksheets. They experience it directly through observation, experimentation, movement, gardening, cooking connections, outdoor exploration, and meaningful conversation.
Lessons often begin with a simple question:
“What do you notice?”
From there, learning grows naturally.
- Students count watermelon seeds while exploring math concepts.
- They trace and compare leaves while studying patterns and observation.
- They plant potatoes and learn how one seed potato becomes an entire harvest underground.
- They study worms, pollinators, composting, weather, ecosystems, nutrition, and the interconnected systems that support life.
Many lessons begin outdoors and continue back inside the classroom through writing, art, discussion, measurement, and creative projects.
More Than Gardening
AgriSTEAM is not simply about growing plants. It is about growing awareness.
Children begin to understand:
- where food comes from
- how living things change and grow
- how humans care for the environment
- how observation leads to understanding
- how small actions affect larger systems
Through these experiences, students develop stewardship, patience, curiosity, responsibility, and respect for the natural world.
